Meghalaya With Friends - Our Rain-Soaked, Laugh-Filled Guide (Places, Hotels & Real-World Fares)

“Pack the rain jackets, not the plans,” my friend Palash joked as we rolled into Shillong after a misty drive from Guwahati. Meghalaya rewards spontaneity—rainbows after sudden showers, tea stalls when you need them most, and locals who’ll point you to hidden trails with a smile. Here’s our no-nonsense, human-first guide to doing Meghalaya with friends—what to see, where to stay (for every budget), and the exact public-transport options we actually used, with current fare ranges.

  • Umiam Lake (Barapani) – Your first “whoa” moment just before Shillong. We pulled over for momos and a group photo as clouds skated over the water.

  • Laitlum Grand Canyon – Sweeping valley views, especially on a clear post-rain evening.

  • Cherrapunji (Sohra)

    • Nohkalikai Falls: a dramatic 1,115-ft plunge with a small entry fee (around ₹20; camera fees often extra). Go early for the blue-green plunge pool glow. TravelTriangle.comFabHotels.comIndian Holiday

  • Dawki (Umngot River) – Glass-clear water boat rides; prices vary by boat and season (commonly a few hundred rupees per boat). We went late afternoon and watched the river turn emerald. (Local rates are posted on site and change with season; ask the union counter.)

  • Krang Suri Falls (Jaintia Hills) – The one we couldn’t stop posting about. Expect entry + optional life-jacket/boating charges posted at the gate (recent guides note ~₹40–₹50 entry, life jacket/boat extra). WanderOnAssamThynkTripadvisor

Premium (special-occasion comfort)

  • Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong – Modern rooms, pool, spa, fitness, kids’ club—great when you want a luxe day between treks.

  • Ri Kynjai – Serenity by the Lake (Umiam) – Lake-view cottages, Khasi-inspired spa, bonfire evenings; our favorite “unplug and stare at the water” spot.

Mid-range (cosy, central, good food)

  • Hotel Polo Towers, Shillong – City classic with on-site restaurants, spa/gym options; convenient for quick hops to markets.

Budget / Backpacker (social + value)

  • Zostel Shillong – Garden, lounge, terrace, free Wi-Fi; easy to meet other travelers and split taxis to Sohra.

Tip: In Sohra (Cherrapunji), look for properties near the main road if you rely on shared cabs; in heavy rain you’ll thank yourself.

Our Friend-Group Moments (a few to steal)

  • “Monsoon cardio” at Nongriat – We started the trek laughing about steps… and stopped counting after the first thousand. Rainbow Falls tempted us, but noodle bowls at a village stall won. No regrets.

  • Boat-ride debates at Dawki – Half the gang wanted photos, half wanted to jump in. We compromised with a longer row, then chai by the river as the light went gold.

  • Storm-watch at Umiam – We checked into a lake-view stay, switched off our phones, and played cards while thunder rolled across the water. If you only schedule one slow evening, make it here.

Practical Tips We Wish We Knew

  • Start early for Sohra and Dawki; fog builds up by afternoon and queues at viewpoints grow.

  • Footwear matters: grippy sandals or trail shoes handle slick stairs and root bridges.

  • Cash is king in small markets and village counters; ATMs can be spaced out.

  • Respect local rules: no littering, mind capacity limits on root bridges, ask before flying drones.
